Although plumbing emergencies vary depending on who's in your household and what type of plumbing set-up you have, in general, the following are emergencies:
 

• A burst pipe, particularly one that you can't isolate: This situation is even more of an emergency if you can't switch off the water supply.
• Sewage entering the home: Whether it's through a backed-up toilet or a blocked drain, any signs of sewage in your home is serious. If you have an alternative toilet or method of disposing of wastewater, the problem can wait until the next working day. If not, you are probably looking at a plumbing emergency.
• Water dripping through your wiring for whatever reason: Start by isolating the water and switching off the power if you can. If you can manage without water and power until the next working day, you don't need to call out an emergency plumber. If you can't, call us out. Do not use water-soaked wiring until the cause has been resolved and the wiring has been checked by an electrician.
• A gas leak: If you and your family are feeling nauseous and dizzy with no obvious explanation, you may have a gas leak. Often caused by badly fitted gas boilers, cookers or fires, you need to act quickly to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning and explosions.

This sounds obvious, but if your valve is a little stiff, it's better to know before you need to use it in an emergency.
 
If the water is trickling through your electrics (for example coming through a ceiling around a light fixture or flooding to electric socket level), switch the power off at the mains.
